Abstrakt EN: The article contains cause investigation of a crack initiation leading to machine component service failure. Fractographic analysis revealed that fatigue damage developed during service. The fracture occured at considerably lower stress than ultimate strength. Fatigue investigation is extensive, as strength of a part subjected to varying load is influenced by a number of factors. Those include the shape of the part, type of loading, manufacturing process type, operation environment and others. In this particular case, more factors had an effect, resulting in fatigue failure. Material quality was the primary factor, as the microstructure of the part contained great amount of sulphide inclusions. Further factors included unsuitable design and traces of a machining tool, constituting surface micro-notches.
