|Abstrakt EN:||The presentation deals with the recent outburst of fabricated news stories picturing the Roma as violent offenders, criminals and con men, widely published in Czech regional and national media in the years 2011 and 2012. Our research draws from computer assisted (MAXQDA) qualitative and quantitative analysis of visual and textual narratives published in print and digital media, and from in-depth narrative interviews with participating journalists, fieldworkers and activists. In our analysis we focus on several interconnected problems. First, the organizing logic of these stories as cultural texts with a strong emphasis on the structural elements of the figure of the Roma perpetrator and on the evolving position of the Roma in the racialized visions of social order implicitly proposed by the narratives. Second, we analyse the functions that these stories play in the context of recurring "Roma scares", as well as the functions that these scares play in the context of the ongoing social transformation. Third, we track the aftermath of the fabrications, i.e. the demonstrations, anti-Roma activism and political declarations appearing before it became known that the stories were fabricated, as well as the modes of (non)reflection appearing in the media and political discourse after it became known that the stories were actually untrue. The last focus of our analysis is on the relation of these stories to the practices and struggles in the journalistic field and to the "law and order" policies proposed with increasing vehemence by various political elites and moral entrepreneurs.|
