Abstrakt EN: The paper focuses on two generations of women living in the Czech Republic who are currently mothers or grandmothers of young children. Based on 30 in-depth interviews with those women it analyzes how the conception of grandmother role varies in different generations. It points out the changes in the way the women reflect on the role of their own grandmothers in their lives as children and how they construct the expectations concerning the role of grandmother with respect to their current life-situation as (grand)mothers. The involvement of grandparents is still a crucial factor enabling mothers of young children to easily return on the labour market and both mothers? and grandmothers? narratives reflected a strong "gendered contact" between generations that involves generational transfer of caring responsibilities. At the same time, however, a norm of active grandmothers is constructed especially by mothers. This norm involves the idea that ?good? grandmother provides not only an instrumental care but above all "adventures". The aim of the paper is to analyze those different conceptions of grandmother role in relation to the changing cultural representation of ageing.
