Abstrakt EN: The shape optimization of an auxiliary inductor for laser edge welding is carried out. The inductor is used for pre-heating the steel material (before heating by the laser beam) in order to prevent its surface layers from undesirable temperature gradients producing unacceptably high residual mechanical strains and stresses. Two objective functions are used for the optimization process: the highest possible temperature along the edge to be welded and the smallest possible weight. The task is magnetically non-linear and the material parameters are functions of temperature. For the purpose of optimization (realized by the specific genetic algorithms) the temperature dependences are neglected, but the result is then compared with the result obtained by the monolithic numerical solution taking into account all the above non-linearities. The methodology is illustrated by a typical example.
