Abstrakt EN: This presentation examines how the Shakespeare play cycle was staged at the National Theatre in Prague in 1916 in terms of the critical reception of particular productions; e.g. The Merchant of Venice, Richard III, Hamlet, and Macbeth, in theatre reviews published in Czech periodicals. I will argue that, in a time of distress, Shakespearean drama served as an effective communication channel by offering spiritual consolation, courage, and a new perspective on the future.
